Suno has introduced Studio 2.0, a major upgrade to its browser-based DAW that brings professional music production workflows together with AI generation — directly shaped by a year of watching artists use the original Studio.
What’s New
MIDI Support
The most requested Studio feature arrives: import, record, and edit MIDI directly on the timeline, with a new wavetable synth for designing your own sounds. Uniquely, MIDI clips can also serve as prompts for new AI audio generations. No MIDI controller? Play notes with your typing keyboard.
AI Chat Bar (Beta)
Studio now has a conversational collaborator: ask it to create instruments and vocals from scratch, or work with it to design custom plugins unique to you. The chat understands music production language, so you can speak to it like another member of the band — even asking it to tidy up your session.
Advanced Stem Separation
The updated stem separation tool extracts stems with high audio fidelity — including audio brought in from outside Suno — enabling clean breakdowns, rearrangements, and rebuilds of songs from their component parts.
Effects, Automation, and Exports
- Audio effects and plugin design — factory devices include sidechain compression and convolution reverb; custom plugins are buildable via chat (free at launch)
- Automation — draw curves to alter track and plugin parameters over time
- Unlimited exports — Premier subscribers export 32-bit/48kHz multitracks and stems without limits
The Philosophy
Suno’s team distilled a year of artist feedback into three principles: we make music with our ears (real-time knob turns), music is tactile (MIDI keyboards and mics beat text prompts for ownership), and speed matters (flow state requires moving at the speed of ideas).
Notably, the post embraces pre-AI music technology — guitars, drum machines, synths, step sequencers — as “tried and true” foundations that belong in next-generation music software, positioning Studio as a bridge between traditional production and AI generation rather than a replacement for either.
Context
Studio 2.0 lands amid a busy stretch for Suno: the $400M raise at $5.4B valuation (June), the BMG global partnership (August 12) tied to its first industry-developed music model, and a downloads policy update effective September 3. The company is racing Udio and others to become the professional creation platform for AI-assisted music — not just a prompt-to-song toy.
