Mistral AI has announced a €3 billion Series D at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion — the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company, achieved just three years after the company’s launch.
The Round
- Lead: Samsung Electronics — following a Series C led by ASML, giving Mistral backing from the world’s most advanced manufacturing and engineering companies
- Co-leads: Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity
- New investors: Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
- Participating existing investors: a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court’s Solar fund, and Salesforce Ventures
The syndicate spans Europe, Asia, and North America — a strategic endorsement reflecting confidence that Mistral can deploy frontier AI inside complex real-world environments while customers keep control of their data and infrastructure.
The Sovereign Thesis
Mistral’s positioning addresses the question it says has replaced “who can build the most powerful model”: how to harness AI for mission-critical needs without surrendering control over infrastructure and the intelligence loop.
The company claims to be the only AI builder constructing the full sovereign stack:
- Open-weight models — controllable and customizable
- Infrastructure and compute — private and predictable capacity
- Products — production systems that are fully auditable
The result: customers are “never locked into a single vendor’s roadmap, pricing or availability,” and organizations can build without exposing valuable data, workflows, or institutional knowledge outside their walls.
The Business Behind It
Mistral operates across 20 countries and supports 125+ global enterprises in mission-critical AI transformations — including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. Its product suite spans Vibe (agentic work), Vibe Code, Studio, Forge (enterprise model training), and Mistral Compute — all built on its open-weight model families.
Context
The raise lands amid a European AI inflection point: Mistral’s in-region inference and sovereign infrastructure announcements in August, its HUMAIN partnership in Saudi Arabia, and the €21B valuation validate Europe’s bet that AI sovereignty is a market, not just a policy goal. For Samsung, the investment secures influence over the leading open-weight alternative to the US-dominated frontier — and for the AI industry, it confirms that the open/sovereign camp now has the capital to compete at scale.
