ElevenLabs has announced a multi-year strategic agreement with Universal Music Group, one of the clearest signals yet that the music industry’s relationship with generative AI has flipped from resistance to structured licensing.
A Busy Year for Both Sides
For ElevenLabs, the deal caps a breakout year: crossing $500M in annual recurring revenue, raising a $500M Series D at an $11B valuation, launching Music v2, Dubbing v2, and an ads engine, and landing partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and the UK Government.
For UMG, this is the second major AI alliance of the cycle — the label previously signed a strategic alliance with Stability AI to co-develop professional music creation tools. Voice is the next frontier: artist voice licensing, AI narration, and multilingual voice content all sit squarely in ElevenLabs’ wheelhouse.
The Bigger Picture
The pattern across 2025–2026 is consistent: major labels (UMG, Warner) are signing AI companies to licensing frameworks rather than fighting them in court — partly because lawsuits against AI music generators like Suno have produced mixed results, and partly because licensed AI voice and music tools create new revenue streams for rights holders.
