OpenAI has introduced the Agents API, a major new platform release that gives developers native building blocks for constructing autonomous AI agents.
What the Agents API Does
Building a reliable agent today typically means stitching together a model, a tool-calling layer, memory, and state management from separate systems. The Agents API brings those pieces into OpenAI’s platform as first-class primitives: developers get built-in support for combining models, tools, and persistent state management for multi-step autonomous work.
The release lands amid a broader agentic push across the industry — Meta’s Muse agent, Anthropic’s Claude agents, and Google’s Gemini agent integrations — and positions OpenAI’s API platform as the default infrastructure layer for the agent era.
Part of a September Product Wave
The Agents API was announced as part of a cluster of OpenAI launches in September 2026:
- GPT-6 Astra — the next-generation model aimed at work and professional use cases
- GPT-Live-1 — a new API for natural, low-latency voice experiences
- ChatGPT for Financial Services — a vertical product launch
- Data tools for everyone — a product release around putting data to work
Together they mark one of OpenAI’s most concentrated product periods, spanning frontier models, developer infrastructure, and vertical enterprise offerings.
