Anthropic has launched Claude for Teachers, giving verified US K-12 educators free access to premium Claude for a full year. The program pairs flagship model access with the Learning Commons, a connector that maps teaching skills to academic standards across all 50 states.
What Teachers Get
Once verified, educators get premium Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork. Claude Code lets the assistant carry work forward on its own — analyzing a folder of instructional materials or running a repeating task like reviewing each day’s de-identified exit tickets at 4pm, so the planning is done by the time teachers drive home.
Built Around the Learning Commons
Learning Commons gives Claude access to academic standards for every state and the smaller competencies and learning sequences beneath them. When Claude drafts a lesson, it is scaffolded and standards-aligned, drawing on trusted curricula like OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics v.360.
Skills Co-Developed With Teachers
- Plan a lesson from high-quality instructional materials mapped to your state’s standards
- Differentiate — Claude builds a differentiation plan with personalized, scaffolded materials for each proficiency level
- Skills were evaluated for rigor and pedagogical alignment and refined with classroom teachers, including schools like Prospect Schools in Brooklyn
An Ecosystem of Classroom Tools
The launch connects educators across a K-12 tool ecosystem: ASSISTments for auto-scored math problems, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Diffit, Eedi, MagicSchool, Snorkl, and TeachFX for instructional feedback grounded in real classroom talk.
Privacy and Student Data
Claude for Teachers is for educators only, in line with Claude’s 18-and-over policy. Training is off for verified teacher accounts — conversations are never used to train models — and student information falls under a K-12 Data Processing Addendum with FERPA-aligned protections. Anthropic is working with the American Federation of Teachers on a privacy gold standard, and with Teach For America on a model-agnostic AI fluency course.
What This Means
Anthropic is framing the program as beneficial deployment rather than a sales play: open-sourced teaching skills, an evaluation pilot with Detroit Public Schools, and Gates Foundation-backed tools. Free premium access for a year removes the cost barrier — betting that when teachers feel the productivity gain, adoption follows.
